No. 20/21 TENNESSEE FALLS IN 16 INNINGS AT VANDERBILT
NASHVILLE, TN — In the longest game in Tennessee baseball history, No. 20/21 Tennessee dropped a 6-5 decision to rival Vanderbilt in a 16-inning marathon at Hawkins Field on Saturday afternoon. Vanderbilt’s Mack Whitcomb delivered the walk-off squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 16th to plate Rustan Rigdon and give the Commodores the series win.
The Vols (18-9, 3-5 SEC) were stifled most of the day—outside of a five-run sixth inning that tied the game, Tennessee managed only five hits and failed to score in each of the other 15 innings they came to the plate. Garrett Wright paced the offense with three hits and a run scored; he was the only Volunteer with multiple hits.
Landon Mack started for Tennessee and struck out nine across five innings, walking none while allowing five runs (four earned). Freshmen reliever Cam Appenzeller was outstanding, tossing six scoreless innings with four strikeouts and four hits allowed, and Bo Rhudy followed with three perfect innings, retiring all nine batters he faced. The Tennessee bullpen combined to keep the Vols in the ballgame until the late extra-inning finish.
Vanderbilt (16-12, 4-4 SEC) got an early boost with a five-run fourth inning that included solo homers by Ryker Waite and Mike Mancini and was helped by a pair of Tennessee errors. Tennessee answered in the sixth—Blake Grimmer delivered a two-run single and Henry Ford crushed a three-run homer, his ninth of the year, to knot the game at five.
After neither team scored for nine innings, Vanderbilt finally broke through in the 16th when it loaded the bases via walks and used a squeeze bunt to score the decisive run. Tennessee left 12 runners on base, including chances with the go-ahead run in scoring position in the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th innings.
The Vols will attempt to salvage the series Sunday afternoon in Nashville.
