Cumberland amassed 321 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns while totaling 453 yards of offense and controlling the clock for 42 minutes and 25 seconds. After a scoreless first quarter, Cumberland broke through with a methodical 19-play, 91-yard drive that consumed more than 10 minutes. Jaylen Abston capped the march with a one-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, giving the Phoenix a 7-0 lead. Florida Memorial answered quickly. David Buggs connected with Elijah Hopkins on a 19-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7 with 9:51 left in the half. Cumberland regained control almost immediately. Kaia Barnett opened the match with a string of strong serves, and the Lady Bulldogs raced out to a 5-0 lead behind blocks from Laila Esters and Jayla Bond, a kill by Trinity Stevenson, and a service ace. Hunter Walker made a series of key saves in goal for the Trojans, while Pablo Ossorio stood tall for Christian Brothers in a match defined by near-misses and late drama. Christian Brothers controlled much of the attacking play from the opening whistle. AJ Bowman forced Walker into an early save in the third minute, and Wouter Ederveen tested the Trevecca keeper again shortly after. LEBANON, TN - A dominant, aggressive second half powered the No. 19-ranked Cumberland University women’s soccer team to a 2–0 victory over Williams Baptist University on Tuesday afternoon. After being held scoreless in a hard-fought opening period, the Phoenix adjusted their tactical intent after halftime to break down a resolute Lady Eagles defensive shape and secure the shutout victory. The first half proved to be a test of patience for Cumberland. Despite generating multiple dangerous chances—including a Ruth Rodriguez strike that rattled the crossbar in the 11th minute—the Phoenix were unable to breach the WBU goal. Williams Baptist goalkeeper Nevaeh Larkins turned away six shots in the opening 45 minutes to keep the game deadlocked at zero heading into the intermission. "It took us a little bit of time to get into the swing of things and playing at the energy level and tempo that we're used to," said Cumberland head coach Scott Davidson. The Blue Raiders led briefly in the third quarter but surrendered 13 unanswered points in the second half as Jax State pulled away. Two field goals and a touchdown pass created the final 10-point deficit. MTSU set an early tone on defense. On the game’s opening drive, safety Kalen Woods intercepted Gamecocks quarterback Caden Creel. Jax State recovered to take a 10-0 lead with a first-quarter field goal and a short rushing touchdown by Creel in the second quarter. Middle Tennessee answered before halftime. Quarterback Roman Gagliano found Cam’ron Lacy for a 5-yard touchdown with 27 seconds left in the half, capping a 14-play, 90-yard drive. Lacy’s touchdown reception marked his fourth consecutive game with a scoring catch. On defense, linebacker Korey Smith led the way with 13 tackles, matching his career high. Cornerback Jackson Lowe posted a career-best 11 tackles less than a week after earning CUSA Defensive Player of the Week honors. Woods and Johnson each recorded interceptions, the first time MTSU has intercepted two passes in a game since late November 2025. Punter Ashton Logan had a strong day as well, landing four punts of 50 or more yards, including a long of 52. The Blue Raiders will be on the road next weekend versus Kansas in Lawerence.

With the win, Middle Tennessee improves to 2-1 on the season—marking its first 2-0 home start since 2021—while Nevada falls to 1-2. The decisive play arrived in the fourth quarter with the game tied. The Phoenix improved to 2-1 with a complete team performance that Head Coach Tim Mathis called “a well-rounded team victory in all phases of the game.” Cumberland finished with 315 yards of total offense, 272 of them on the ground, while averaging 6.0 yards per carry and converting 10-of-12 third-down attempts. Pikeville struck first. On the Bears’ opening drive, Jayden Pepper broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run, giving the visitors a 7-0 lead with 8:09 left in the first quarter. Cumberland answered late in the period when Jordan Cason raced 32 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 7-7 on Jack Kantner’s extra point. NASHVILLE, TN - The Nashville Sounds’ postseason hopes took another hit Saturday night at First Horizon Park, as the team fell 9-3 to the Memphis Redbirds for its fourth straight loss. The defeat marked Nashville’s eighth series loss of the season and tied the club’s longest losing streak of the year, a run the Sounds had last seen earlier this summer (June 12-16). The game featured early fireworks and late separation. Nashville struck first when Brandon Lockridge crushed a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first—his first long ball since July 29 against Charlotte. Thursday night at First Horizon Park was a tough one for the Nashville Sounds, as they fell to the Memphis Redbirds 14-1, dropping their second straight game in the series. The defeat was the largest loss of the season for Nashville, as Memphis powered through 20 Sound hits allowed for the second time this year. Over the last two matchups, the Redbirds have outscored the Sounds 25-2, including an eight-run top of the sixth that all but flipped the game on its head. Despite the lopsided score, Nashville did get a standout performance from Tyler Black. The slugger delivered his third three-hit game of the year, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and the Sounds’ lone RBI of the night. On the mound, left-hander Tate Kuehner got Nashville off to a good start, working 4.0 innings and allowing just one run on five hits. Things quickly unraveled, though, as Memphis struck for three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Later, the Redbirds again took control in the sixth, loading the bases and sending 13 batters to the plate in the inning—eventually plating six straight runs to expand the advantage. Nashville’s final three innings were handled by position players Daniel Guilarte and Ethan Murray. Guilarte allowed a pair of runs, including a two-run homer just two batters into his second career pitching appearance, while Murray tossed a perfect 1-2-3 ninth. For Memphis, Six Redbirds collected multi-hit games, led by Grayson Tarlow, who went 4-for-5 with four singles and helped deliver several key rallies. At a lively ceremony inside Vanderbilt University’s historic Memorial Gymnasium, UPSHOT Nashville unveiled the name and logo of its new professional women’s basketball franchise: the Nashville Vibe. The team will tip off its inaugural season in 2027 as the sixth franchise in the UPSHOT League, playing home games at Memorial Gym. The announcement completed a long-awaited chapter for a city that already boasts Predators, Titans, Nashville SC, Nashville Sounds, and a deep women’s basketball tradition stretching from Vanderbilt to the University of Tennessee. “This team is so overdue for Nashville,” said Cathy Bender, one of the co-owners and Nashville native and legend, reflecting on years of conversations at the Sports Authority table. “Tennessee is a women’s basketball state. The demand is here. We don’t have to create it.” The franchise, organizers stressed, represents more than another sports team — it completes Nashville’s circle of professional franchises while strengthening a civic and economic asset. Three-time national champion and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Chamique Holdsclaw, an investor and panelist, drew laughs when she admitted her preferred name. “I thought it should be the Nashville Volunteers,” she said with a grin. The group settled on Vibe after considering more than 25 options, choosing a name meant to capture the city’s rhythm, energy, neighborhoods, music and sports culture. NASHVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Titans opened the 2026 season with a familiar and frustrating result, falling 23-10 to the New York Jets on Sunday at Nissan Stadium in Robert Saleh’s regular-season debut as head coach. The Jets controlled the game from the start, scoring on their opening drive and never trailing. Breece Hall rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown, while Geno Smith completed 19 of 24 passes for 215 yards. New York dominated time of possession nearly 39 minutes to 21 and outgained Tennessee 367-195. Saleh and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll should prioritize scheme simplicity and repetitive fundamentals to give Ward the stability he has lacked after cycling through multiple coordinators. Defensively, the unit must do a better job setting the edge and limiting yards after contact against the run, an area where the Jets repeatedly succeeded. Special teams and discipline also require tighter execution. With the Philadelphia Eagles visiting next Sunday, Tennessee has little time to correct course. One game does not define a season, but the Titans showed they still have significant work ahead under their new regime.

Fisk's September surge was put to the test in a thrilling four-set battle against Lindsey Wilson College. Powered by set-orchestrator Kaia Barnett, who consistently fed dynamic options across the net, the Lady Bulldogs captured Set 1 with a 25-23 victory. After dropping Set 2 (25-23), Fisk flexed its resilience. Down late in the fourth frame, serve specialist Shelby Chamblin delivered a crucial service ace to swing momentum before the Lady Bulldogs closed out the 3-1 match win (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23) via a crucial joint block by Laila Esters and Chennille McClellan. The momentum carried seamlessly into a high-stakes showdown against Cumberlands University (KY). The Lady Bulldogs claimed Set 1 (25-22) behind powerful front-row kills from Esters and Shelby Chamblin. After Cumberland edged out Set 2, Fisk came out firing in Set 3 behind early dominant runs from La'Niyah Lumpkin and Reagan Jones, holding off a late Phoenix push to take the set 25-22. In the decisive fourth set, baseline pressure made all the difference; back-to-back service aces from Kacie Miyahira blew open an 18-14 lead, while Barnett sealed the 3-1 victory (25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22) with a walk-off service ace on match point. Fisk saved its most dominant performance of the stretch in a Thursday night (Sept. 10) match against Oakwood University, sweeping the Ambassador squad in explosive fashion. In Set 1, the Lady Bulldogs unleashed an overwhelming attack, leaning on heavy swings from Lumpkin and Chamblin alongside ace serving from McClellan to cruise to a 25-7 win. The secondary frame proved no different as Barnett set the tone early from the service line with consecutive aces, propelling Fisk to double-digit leads and setting the pace for a swift 3-0 sweep. Through every pressure-packed rally and late-set battle, Fisk’s balanced playmaking and aggressive serving have proven unshakeable. Standing at 12-4 overall and flawless through September, the Lady Bulldogs show no signs of cooling down as they head deeper into regular season play. MONTEVALLO, AL - The Trevecca Nazarene University men’s soccer team opened Gulf South Conference play on Saturday night by extending its historic unbeaten streak, battling the University of Montevallo to a 1-1 draw at Varsity Soccer Field. With the result, Trevecca (4-0-1, 0-0-1 GSC) remains unbeaten through its first five matches of a season for the first time in program history. The Trojans previously matched their best four-game start set by the 2006 squad, but Saturday's road draw officially pushed the 2026 team into unchartered territory. The match also marked Trevecca’s first positive result against Montevallo in four all-time meetings. Montevallo (0-2-2, 0-0-1 GSC) drew first blood in the 22nd minute when Joaquin Wladdimiro slotted home his second goal of the season at 21:40. The Falcons carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime after holding a 5-0 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes. Trevecca responded quickly after the break. In the 54th minute, Haden Brown helped orchestrate an attack and found Chris Douglas, who finished at 53:52 to pull the Trojans level at 1-1. The equalizer marked Douglas' fifth goal in five matches this season, matching his entire scoring output from the 2025 campaign. The junior forward has now found the net in four of Trevecca’s five contests this fall. Brown picked up his second assist of the year on the play. Neither team could break the deadknot over the final 36 minutes. Montevallo outshot Trevecca 11-6 overall and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks, but Trojan goalkeeper Hunter Walker anchored the defense with three saves to preserve the point on the road. Trevecca has outscored opponents 11-3 through five matches while earning three clean sheets. The Phoenix (1-1) dictated the tempo from start to finish, racking up 411 total yards of offense while controlling the football for more than 36 minutes. Cumberland’s multi-faceted rushing attack accounted for 266 yards, while the defense completely shut down Ave Maria’s ground game, holding the Gyrenes to just 19 rushing yards and 205 total yards. Dual-threat quarterback Jake Parker orchestrated the Cumberland offense with precision. Parker led all rushers with 101 yards on 11 carries while adding 145 yards and two touchdowns through the air on 14-of-24 passing. Former Lebanon standout Jaylen Abston and tailback Jordan Cason provided strong secondary options, each logging 66 rushing yards and a touchdown. After a scoreless opening frame, the Phoenix cracked the game open early in the second quarter. Cason capped a five-play, 38-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown burst at the 13:07 mark to put Cumberland ahead 7-0. Following a defensive stop, Cumberland mounted a methodical 11-play march that took over six minutes off the clock, finishing with Parker finding Kaiden Hatchett for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Just moments later, Tristan Bohannon recovered a Joseph Thole fumble at the Ave Maria 18-yard line. The Blue Raiders, now 1-1 on the season, fell to Marshall, also 1-1, by a 28-26 score in their first road game of the year after a late fourth-quarter rally came up short at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Middle Tennessee entered the final stretch trailing 28-20, but a poised sequence from redshirt sophomore quarterback Roman Gagliano gave the Blue Raiders new life. With under two minutes remaining and facing 4th-and-10 from the Marshall 33, Gagliano escaped pressure and connected with wideout AJ Jones for a 15-yard gain. Two plays later, the same duo hooked up again, this time turning into another 15-yard touchdown pass to pull MTSU within two points. MTSU opted to go for two to tie the game, but Gagliano’s throw to the right side was incomplete, leaving the Blue Raiders to finish the night chasing the lead rather than leveling it. Marshall appeared in control for much of the evening, but Middle Tennessee’s defense made its presence felt early and often. In the first quarter, the Blue Raiders scored after an errant snap over Marshall quarterback Carlos Del-Rio Wilson trickled into the end zone. Wilson recovered, only to have Aidan Butts force a fumble that safety Kalen Woods recovered for a touchdown—MTSU’s second defensive score in two weeks and Woods’ second fumble-recovery touchdown in as many weeks. The offense answered as well. Dominic Bourgeois delivered a 52-yard field goal early in the second quarter to give Middle Tennessee a 10-7 lead, a kick that tied for the fifth-longest in program history. Later, Bourgeois hit from 50 yards again to swing the lead back toward Marshall, 14-13, before Gagliano found redshirt junior Cam’ron Lacy for an 11-yard touchdown to make it 20-14 at halftime’s aftermath. Marshall retook the lead with a touchdown drive that made it 21-20. In the closing minutes, an interception by Marshall’s Zah Jackon set up a two-yard rushing touchdown that pushed the Thundering Herd’s advantage to 28-20. That proved pivotal, but the Blue Raiders refused to quit, repeatedly turning momentum into scoring chances, including the late TD to Jones that set up the final two-point attempt. By the numbers, Woods added his second career touchdown, Lacy reset his personal best with nine catches, and linebacker Korey Smith recorded a career-high 13 tackles. Next week, Middle Tennessee returns home for Week 3, hosting Nevada, with the Wolf Pack coming to “The Boro” at 1-0.
