All They Do Is Win! Cumberland Wrestling Keeps Rolling, Downs Georgetown to Stay Undefeated

LEBANON, TN — The Cumberland Phoenix wrestling team has an impressive run this season. They remain undefeated as a team with a decisive 36-9 victory over Georgetown, showcasing their strength as they approach the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Championships. This latest win highlighted Cumberland’s dominance, particularly in the middle and lower weight classes, where the team showcased remarkable depth and skill.
The Phoenix wasted no time setting the tone in the meet. No. 25 Elijah Griffin started strong at 157 pounds, securing a swift 16-0 technical fall against Jeremy Mills. Logan Brown added another tech fall at 165 pounds, cruising past Sam Daniels with a score of 21-3. The momentum continued as Anthony Pyron electrified the crowd with a pin at 174 pounds, pushing Cumberland's lead to 16-0.
Although Georgetown briefly rallied with victories in the upper weights, including a close decision at 197 pounds, the Phoenix quickly regained control. Chase Walker reignited the energy with a fall at 125 pounds, followed by Bentley Ellison’s impressive 18-3 technical fall at 133. Sammy Shires capped off the scoring spree with a 19-2 tech fall, and No. 1 Victor Guzman closed the night with a commanding 22-8 major decision, further solidifying the strength Cumberland has displayed all season.
Coach James Hicks: The Architect of Success
At the helm of this successful season is Head Coach James Hicks, who is steering the program the program for a tenth year. Hicks has created a wrestling culture that prioritizes discipline, development, and character. Since 2014 the team has ranked in the NAIA top 10, six times. Under Coach Hicks achieving that mark four times in a row from 2021 - 24. The team currently sits in strong position as they prepare for the MSC Championships, reflecting Hicks' ability to consistently recruit high-caliber wrestlers who embody his coaching philosophy.
Under Hicks’ guidance, Cumberland has not only excelled in competition but also earned him accolades that recognize a commitment to excellence. Hicks has won the MSC Coach of the Year award three times, including this past season, and was honored with the MSC Coaching for Significance Award.
A Season of Milestones and Achievements
The 2025-26 season has been a remarkable one for the Phoenix. With an undefeated record in dual competition and dominating individual performances, Cumberland is ready for flight. So far, they have sent multiple wrestlers to the national stage, including top-ranked Victor Guzman, who remains undefeated and is a key player heading into the championship season.
