Cumberland Football Fall Camp Report: Home Dominance, QB Growth, Defensive Chaos

Cumberland University football is officially in fall camp, and the Phoenix are setting the tone early with a message that’s simple—but demanding. Head coach Mathis says elite teams don’t chase individual headlines. They play for each other, especially when the game is on the line.

The report highlights how that mindset is building momentum. Cumberland closed last season 7–4, including an undefeated record at home, and carried that production into camp with an identity built around confidence, discipline, and fast, hard competition.

Coach Mathis also points to what makes the program successful at Nokes-Lasater Field—treating the home crowd like a true “12th man.” With continuity on both sides of the ball, the focus in camp isn’t reinvention, it’s refinement: nine of 11 returning on offense, and nine of 11 returning on defense.

There are also key battles ahead, including offensive line and running back roles, quarterback growth with Jake Parker, and a defense built to create chaos.
