LEBANON, TN — Cumberland University’s tennis teams picked up impressive wins over Georgetown on Saturday, with the men’s squad prevailing 5-2 in a tightly contested match and the women’s team rolling to a 7-0 sweep.
Men
The men’s match opened with a competitive doubles session that set the tone for a physical, team-oriented afternoon. Cumberland claimed the doubles point by winning two of three flights. The Tigers’ top pairing delivered a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Georgetown’s Carlos Morillas and Mateus Mori. At No. 2 doubles, Arthur Fernandes and Arne Sohmer battled to a tense 7-6 (7-0) victory to knot the match at 1-1, while Georgetown’s Mohamed Bouhlel and Matheus Guarnieri posted a 6-2 result on court three to keep the visitors close.
Singles play belonged largely to Cumberland, which won four of six matches to secure the overall team victory. Matheus Guarnieri collected a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-1, and Fernandes added a hard-fought three-set triumph at No. 3, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Bouhlel produced a dominant performance at No. 4 singles, closing out his match 6-2, 6-0. The clinching point came from Mateus Mori, who controlled his match in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
Georgetown took the only two singles points of the day on court one and court six, where Morillas and Magnus Johansen won 7-5, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.
Cumberland will quickly turn its attention to a rescheduled road test against Tennessee Tech on Tuesday in Cookeville.
Women
The Cumberland women were relentless from the opening serve, sweeping Georgetown 7-0 without dropping a set. The Phoenix grabbed the doubles point with convincing victories across the board: Valentina Mendez and Ana Melo Bulcao Souza won 6-2, Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud prevailed 6-1, and Elina Sungatullina and Arbelaez closed doubles play with a 6-2 result at No. 1.
That dominance carried into singles, where Cumberland controlled every court. Mendez led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win; Timur followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Arbelaez, Sungatullina, Ame Van Eijk and Ana Melo Bulcao Souza each added straight-set wins to complete the shutout. Collectively, the Phoenix surrendered only a handful of games in singles play, underscoring the margin of control throughout the lineup.
Up next for the women is a Friday matchup at Georgia Gwinnett, where Cumberland will seek its first-ever win over the perennial Grizzlies power.
