Cumberland Phoenix Dominate with Rushing Attack and Defensive Scores in 49-21 Win over Pikeville

LEBANON, TN - Cumberland University turned a competitive first half into a decisive second-half statement Saturday night, using a powerful ground game and three defensive touchdowns to defeat RV Pikeville 49-21 at Nokes-Lasater Field.

The Phoenix improved to 2-1 with a complete team performance that Head Coach Tim Mathis called “a well-rounded team victory in all phases of the game.” Cumberland finished with 315 yards of total offense, 272 of them on the ground, while averaging 6.0 yards per carry and converting 10-of-12 third-down attempts.

Pikeville struck first. On the Bears’ opening drive, Jayden Pepper broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run, giving the visitors a 7-0 lead with 8:09 left in the first quarter. Cumberland answered late in the period when Jordan Cason raced 32 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 7-7 on Jack Kantner’s extra point.

The Phoenix took the lead for good in the second quarter. After a methodical 17-play, 73-yard drive that consumed more than 10 minutes, Jaylen Abston punched it in from a yard out. Kantner’s kick made it 14-7 at halftime.

Cumberland’s defense took over after the break. On Pikeville’s first possession of the third quarter, Tyriq Edwards intercepted a Caden Henson pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 21-7. Pikeville responded with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Henson to Grant Scott, but the Phoenix answered quickly. Jordan Parker scored on an 8-yard run to make it 28-14.

Moments later, Lance Mathews sacked Henson, forcing a fumble that Mason Smiley recovered and returned 39 yards for another defensive score. The extra point stretched the margin to 35-14 with just over two minutes left in the third.

Pikeville closed the gap to 35-21 early in the fourth on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Henson to Ty Perkins. Cumberland answered with Rashod Daniel’s 27-yard touchdown run, then sealed the win when Jacobi Johnson intercepted Henson and raced 70 yards for the final touchdown. Chase Dodson’s kick completed the 49-21 final.

Abston led the rushing attack with 87 yards and a score on 14 carries. Cason added 80 yards and a touchdown on 10 attempts, while Daniel contributed 68 yards and a score. Jake Parker completed 5-of-9 passes for 43 yards and added 36 rushing yards.

Defensively, Cannon Johnson paced the unit with nine tackles. Smiley recorded six tackles, a forced fumble and a touchdown return. The Phoenix defense finished with nine tackles for loss, three sacks and six pass breakups while forcing three turnovers, all of which resulted in scores.

“It was a total team effort,” Mathis said. “Offense after the first series played well. Defense definitely played well, especially special teams. Our kickoff team was awesome. We had three guys averaging over six yards a carry, and all three scored. We talked all week about having faith in each other, and that showed.”

Cumberland returns home next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT against Florida Memorial.
