Late Strike by Jones Lifts Trevecca Past Christian Brothers 1-0
MEMPHIS, TN - Zion Jones scored in the 85th minute to give Trevecca Nazarene a 1-0 victory over Christian Brothers on Sunday, handing the Buccaneers a hard-fought road defeat in non-conference action.
Hunter Walker made a series of key saves in goal for the Trojans, while Pablo Ossorio stood tall for Christian Brothers in a match defined by near-misses and late drama.
Christian Brothers controlled much of the attacking play from the opening whistle. AJ Bowman forced Walker into an early save in the third minute, and Wouter Ederveen tested the Trevecca keeper again shortly after. Daiki Ebihara and Olivier van der Tuin also forced stops as the Buccaneers generated repeated chances in the first half. Matthias Ran De Berg and Christopher Armitage both sent efforts wide as Christian Brothers pressed for the breakthrough.
Trevecca’s defense absorbed the pressure and limited clear-cut opportunities. Zion Jones received a yellow card in the 16th minute, and the sides traded fouls throughout a physical opening period. Walker’s sharp handling kept the score level at the break despite Christian Brothers’ territorial edge.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Alessandro Merlo forced a team save early after the restart, and Elliot Whalley produced another strong stop from Walker. Substitutions brought fresh legs for both sides, with Christian Brothers introducing Miguel Cannavo, Lauri Orava and others in search of a goal. Walker continued to frustrate the visitors, denying Ederveen and Bowman again as the clock ticked toward the final stages.
Trevecca finally found the decisive moment with just over five minutes remaining. Haden Brown and Deron Ferguson combined to set up Jones, who finished cleanly to put the Trojans ahead 1-0. The goal stood as the only score of the match.
Christian Brothers pushed forward in the closing minutes, sending additional attackers onto the field, but Trevecca’s back line held firm. Offside calls and a late foul on Brown helped the home side see out the result.
Walker’s performance in goal proved decisive, as he repeatedly denied a Christian Brothers attack that generated the majority of the match’s shots. The Buccaneers finished with numerous efforts on target and several corners, yet could not convert.
For Trevecca, the victory provided a valuable result against a competitive opponent. Jones’ late finish capped a resilient defensive effort and rewarded the Trojans for staying organized under sustained pressure.
Christian Brothers will look to bounce back quickly after creating enough chances to take something from the match. The Buccaneers showed quality in possession and created consistent opportunities, but clinical finishing and a late defensive lapse proved costly.
The result leaves both programs with work to do as the season continues, but Trevecca walks away with three points and a memorable late winner from Jones.
