Middle Tennessee Women’s Soccer Shuts Out West Georgia, Wins 2–0

CARROLLTON, GA - The Middle Tennessee women’s soccer team delivered a balanced and dominant effort on both sides of the ball Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 2–0 victory at West Georgia.

MTSU’s breakthrough came early when Saachi Bureau scored just 15 minutes into the match, using a quick exchange from Mya Stenehjem and Ania Denham to finish inside the box and give the Blue Raiders a 1–0 lead. After halftime, Middle Tennessee doubled its advantage as Denham rose to meet Hannah Murphy’s corner kick and redirected it into the net for the second goal of the day.

Defensively, the Blue and White were equally impressive. Goalkeeper Demi Gronauer recorded zero saves, as her back line controlled the tempo and limited West Georgia’s chances. The shutout was MTSU’s fourth straight, helping extend the team’s impressive start: the squad remains unbeaten through its first four matches for the second consecutive year.

Middle Tennessee also continued a rare defensive stretch, as the team has now held each of its first four opponents scoreless for the first time in program history. The Blue Raiders have posted a defensive run dating back to last season as well, keeping four straight opponents scoreless for the first time since 2013.

Head coach Aston Rhoden praised the team’s response after a tighter contest on Thursday, saying the group played closer to its identity against a well-organized UWG side. He also noted how the win sets up a return to familiar ground after a three-game road swing.

MTSU’s offense stayed active throughout, forcing multiple saves and firing 11 shots in the second half—including several that tested West Georgia keeper Emily Sanabria.

Up next, Middle Tennessee begins a three-game homestand starting Thursday, Aug. 27 against Miami (OH) at 7 p.m.
