AUSTIN, TX — Nashville Soccer Club made history Wednesday night by winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, becoming the first major professional sports team from Tennessee to claim a championship. Nashville SC defeated Austin FC 2-1 at Q2 Stadium to secure their first trophy just six years since joining Major League Soccer.

Nashville took an early lead when captain Mukhtar scored in the 17th minute with a powerful shot that beat Austin’s goalkeeper Brad Stuver. Austin fought back and earned a penalty after a foul by Nashville’s goalkeeper Brian Schwake, but Schwake made a crucial save to keep Nashville ahead. Just before halftime, Austin’s Myrto Uzuni equalized, sending the teams into the break tied 1-1.

In the second half, Nashville was awarded a penalty after an Austin defender’s handball, and Sam Surridge calmly converted to put Nashville ahead 2-1. The goal proved decisive despite Surridge’s late red card for a second yellow.

Goalkeeper Brian Schwake was a standout performer, making seven saves including the key penalty stop, maintaining his perfect record in the tournament. Manager B.J. Callaghan earned his first trophy with Nashville SC in his first full season, reflecting the team’s growth and ambition.

By winning the U.S. Open Cup, Nashville SC also qualified for the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup, giving the club another chance to compete on the international stage.

Mukhtar expressed the significance of the win, saying, “It’s important for us to know we can win a trophy. It gives us extra confidence for the rest of the season.” The victory is a milestone not only for Nashville SC but for Tennessee sports history.

An all-woman officiating crew led by referee Tori Penso made history in the final, showcasing progress in the sport.

Nashville SC will celebrate the championship with fans at GEODIS Park on Oct. 5 before returning to MLS play. This landmark win marks the start of a new era for the club and Tennessee soccer.
