The Nashville college tennis scene delivered compelling drama on Friday, with local programs showcasing both resilience and heartbreak across multiple matches.

Vanderbilt's Gutsy Comeback Stuns Oklahoma

NORMAN, OK - The standout performance of the evening came from No. 37 Vanderbilt's men's tennis team, which staged a remarkable comeback to defeat No. 33 Oklahoma,

4-3, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. After dropping the doubles point and falling behind 3-0 in singles play, the Commodores refused to surrender, demonstrating the character and determination that head coach Scott Brown has instilled in the program.

"What a great battle against Oklahoma," Brown said after the match. "What makes these guys and this program so special is they showed their grit, determination and fight to come back."

The Sooners appeared to be in control after claiming the doubles point with victories at the top two positions. Oklahoma then extended its advantage by winning at courts one and three in singles play, putting Vanderbilt in a precarious position. However, the Commodores' lower-court players became the heroes of the day. Junior Hugo Coquelin ignited the comeback at the No. 6 position, defeating Luka Talan Lopatic 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Jack Satterfield followed immediately with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 89 Asahi Harazaki, marking Satterfield's first career ranked singles win and giving Vanderbilt momentum heading into the final matches.

The match ultimately came down to senior Nathan Cox and sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez, both playing in decisive three-set contests. Cox delivered first, pulling out a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win over Johan Rodriguez to move to an impressive 12-0 in dual match singles play this season. Martinez Gomez then sealed the comeback in dramatic fashion, fighting back from a 5-2 deficit in the final set against No. 79 Oscar Lacides. After Lacides tied the match at 5-5, Martinez Gomez won both deciding games on deuce points to clinch the victory.

"It just shows the character and culture of this team," Brown reflected. "We were down

3-0, but we never gave up. We kept fighting, running balls down, trusting our shots."

The victory improved Vanderbilt to 10-2 overall and 2-1 in SEC play, marking the program's best start since 2019. The Commodores also recorded their first road SEC win since February 24, 2025, ending a three-match skid in away contests.

Middle Tennessee Dominates Top-20 Princeton

MURFREESBORO, TN - No. 39 Middle Tennessee State delivered an impressive performance on home courts, sweeping No. 19 Princeton 7-0 at the Adams Tennis Complex. The Blue Raiders' dominant display marked a significant achievement, as it was their first victory over a top-20 team since March 9, 2023, when they defeated Northwestern 4-3 on the road.

Middle Tennessee controlled the match from the opening doubles point, with seniors Eric Crivei and Jonasz Dziopak securing a 6-2 victory on court two, and freshmen Houston Jacques and Antoine Mayoral clinching the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court three. The court one match between No. 38 Karim Al-Amin and Ondrej Horak remained unfinished once the point was secured.

The Blue Raiders carried their momentum seamlessly into singles play, with Al-Amin extending the lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ardila on court two. Crivei followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court six, and junior Birtan Duran posted a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory on court three.

Horak secured the clinching point on court one with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Fnu Nidunjianzan, while senior Freddy Murray added another point with a 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 1-0 (10-2) victory on court five. Dziopak completed the sweep on court four with a 7-5, 7-6 triumph over Jordan Reznik.

"The last time they took down a top-20 team was on March 9, 2023, when they beat #19 Northwestern 4-3 on the road," a program statement noted, highlighting the significance of Friday's dominant performance.

University of Tennessee: A Tough Battle Against Auburn

KNOXVILLE, TN - In a closely contested match, the University of Tennessee men's tennis team faced Auburn, where they rallied back to a tense 4-3 loss. The match kicked off with the doubles competition, critical in setting the tone for the day. Auburn seized early leads on Courts two and three, putting immense pressure on the Vols. Despite their efforts, the Vols could not clinch the doubles point, losing on the first two courts before their court two match was left unfinished at 5-5.

In singles play, the Vols fought valiantly. Jan Kobierski opened the scoreboard with a solid victory over Freddy Blaydes, while Jose Garcia achieved his second career-ranked singles win, defeating No. 86 Billy Blaydes. Dragos Cazacu also secured his first collegiate victory against Nicholas Heng. Yet, as excitement surged within the Tennessee fans, Auburn's Hamza Nasridinov ultimately clinched the match, showcasing the resilience of both teams.

Golden Eagles Rally Late to Secure 4-3 Victory Over Bisons

COOKEVILLE, TN - The Lipscomb University men's tennis team came agonizingly close to securing a road victory against Tennessee Tech, but the Golden Eagles' late-match rally proved too much to overcome in a 4-3 defeat Friday afternoon at the Tech Tennis Courts.

After Tennessee Tech swept the doubles point by claiming all three flights, Lipscomb mounted a spirited comeback in singles play. Oliver Thoeny got the Bisons on the board first with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court six. Alex Vlahos then secured his first dual win of the spring with a 6-4, 7-6 result on court four to even the match at 2-2.

Oskar Szymczak (15-9) pushed Lipscomb to the brink of victory with a crucial three-set win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, giving the Bisons a 3-2 advantage and putting them one court away from clinching the match on the road. However, Tennessee Tech's resilience proved decisive. The Golden Eagles won three-set battles on courts two and three to complete the comeback and secure the 4-3 victory.

Despite the loss, Lipscomb (5-5) showed the competitive mettle that has defined their season. Tennessee Tech (4-5) has now won four of its last five matches, demonstrating improved form heading into the remainder of their schedule. The Bisons will return to action on March 12 when they open their outdoor home schedule against Belmont.
