No. 19 Phoenix Women's Soccer Control Second Half to Shut Out Williams Baptist, 2–0

LEBANON, TN - A dominant, aggressive second half powered the No. 19-ranked Cumberland University women’s soccer team to a 2–0 victory over Williams Baptist University on Tuesday afternoon. After being held scoreless in a hard-fought opening period, the Phoenix adjusted their tactical intent after halftime to break down a resolute Lady Eagles defensive shape and secure the shutout victory.

The first half proved to be a test of patience for Cumberland. Despite generating multiple dangerous chances—including a Ruth Rodriguez strike that rattled the crossbar in the 11th minute—the Phoenix were unable to breach the WBU goal. Williams Baptist goalkeeper Nevaeh Larkins turned away six shots in the opening 45 minutes to keep the game deadlocked at zero heading into the intermission.

"It took us a little bit of time to get into the swing of things and playing at the energy level and tempo that we're used to," said Cumberland head coach Scott Davidson. "We've had a lot of games recently, so that's expected and [we're] a bit tired. It was just a case of making sure we came out in the second half, tried to get the job done, and just controlled the game."

That second-half surge arrived almost immediately. In the 51st minute, Cumberland finally broke through when Victoria Collins finished off a pass from Uxia Varela to notch the game's opening goal. The Phoenix continued to press relentlessly, overwhelming the Eagles' backline with persistent attacks and maintaining complete control of match possession.

"I was happy with the creativeness and the desire to go forward and score," Davidson noted regarding his attack. "That's something we talked about at halftime—just being a little bit more aggressive with what we're trying to do and having a little bit more intent."

The insurance strike came in the 76th minute. Turnabout turned provider as Collins set up Sabrina Barbosa, who buried her shot to double the Cumberland lead to 2–0. Defensively, goalkeeper Sydney Eads and the Phoenix backline recorded a comfortable clean sheet, limiting Williams Baptist to just three total attempts on the day.

While the Phoenix dictated play for much of the afternoon, Davidson remains focused on continuous squad development as a grueling mid-season schedule approaches.

"Overall, we're happy against a decent team that was very well organized," Davidson said. "We’re a fairly new team, so it took us a little bit to get up and running. But now I think that we're gradually getting to know each other and know our roles. Hopefully, we just continue to improve the performance so that we can move into conference tournament and national tournament time in a really good place."

With the win in hand, No. 19 Cumberland quickly turns its attention to a crucial road clash on Thursday against conference opponent Georgetown College.
