Brown’s record assists and Douglas’ brace power Trojans to program-record 11th win and share of first place in GSC

MONTGOMERY, AL - In what was billed as the biggest match in program history, No. 20 Trevecca Nazarene University men’s soccer delivered a statement performance Saturday, blanking No. 10 Auburn Montgomery 3-0 on the road to claim a share of first place in the Gulf South Conference.

The Trojans (11-1-2, 6-1-2 GSC) set a new program record for single-season wins while earning their first-ever victory over the Warhawks (9-2-3, 6-1-2 GSC). It marked the first time in Trevecca’s 28-season soccer history that both teams entered a match ranked. Chris Douglas scored twice to break the NCAA-era career goals record, and true freshman Haden Brown recorded two assists to become the program’s single-season assists leader with nine.

Daniel Shiel opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Douglas raced down the right side, stopped at the top of the box, and found Shiel, who settled and finished for his eighth goal of the season. Two AUM goals were waved off for offside in the opening 10 minutes, and Trevecca carried a 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Warhawks 7-6.

Early in the second half, Brown delivered a ball into the box from the left wing. Douglas finished it for his 14th goal of the year, tying the NCAA-era career goals mark and giving Trevecca a 2-0 advantage. The assist pushed Brown past the previous single-season assists record shared by Judah Jones and Jeremiah Wright.

Auburn Montgomery hit the woodwork multiple times — Fabio Guerreiro struck the left post, and later efforts from Benjamin Hoffmann and Brennan Greer rang the crossbar — but could not break through. Hunter Walker recorded the shutout in goal for Trevecca, making one save while posting his seventh clean sheet of the season.

Douglas delivered the final blow in the 89th minute. Brown played him into space, and Douglas struck from about 22 yards. Warhawks keeper Jakob Buhrkuhl got a hand to it, but the ball looped under the bar for Douglas’ 15th goal of the season and 26th of his career, surpassing Wright’s previous record of 25.

Douglas is now within six points of Wright’s career points record of 67. Only Mauricio Dos Santos (40) and Mark Foster (41) have scored more career goals in Trevecca history. The win also gave the Trojans the tiebreaker over AUM atop the GSC table. Only Alabama-Huntsville remains within striking distance, two points back with limited games remaining. A victory in the regular-season finale would clinch at least a share of the conference title and the top seed in the GSC Championship.

In three previous meetings, AUM had outscored Trevecca 9-2. Saturday’s result flipped the script in convincing fashion.

Trevecca closes the regular season Friday, Oct. 23, hosting West Alabama at 7 p.m. The Trojans will also host a first-round GSC Championship match on Halloween, with the opponent and time to be determined.
