First defeat of the season snaps historic start, but resilience shines through for Cumberland men’s soccer.

LEBANON, TN - For 13 matches, the Cumberland University men’s soccer team soared without a single loss. Ranked as high as No. 1 in the NAIA, the Phoenix built a 9-0-4 record through grit, timely scoring, and stout defense. That unbeaten run ended Tuesday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium when No. 5 Faulkner left with a 2-0 victory.

The visitors applied early pressure. Just over six minutes in, Angel Ugwumba stepped to the penalty spot after a foul. Goalkeeper Pau Gelabert rose to the moment, diving to deny the kick and keep the score level. Gelabert added two more saves before the half, ensuring the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.

Cumberland created chances of their own. The Phoenix finished with 11 shots and six on target, forcing Faulkner keeper Andre Ferreira into six saves. Yet the breakthrough came in the 59th minute. Ugwumba finished a well-worked move, assisted by Leo Freire and Asaph Silveira, for the game’s first goal.

The Phoenix pushed hard for an equalizer. They generated pressure and corners, but the Eagles’ defense held firm. Late drama arrived in the 82nd minute when Jostin Angel received a red card. Faulkner quickly capitalized on the numerical advantage. Konsti Witte scored in the 83rd minute, assisted by Freire, to seal the 2-0 result.

The loss drops Cumberland to 9-1-4 overall and 3-0-2 in Mid-South Conference play. Their unbeaten streak had included convincing wins, hard-fought draws against ranked foes such as Lindsey Wilson and the University of the Cumberlands, and consistent contributions from attackers and a reliable back line anchored by Gelabert.

The Phoenix now turn their attention to the final regular-season and conference match. On Saturday they host Campbellsville for Senior Day, an opportunity to finish strong at home and carry momentum into the postseason.

One defeat does not define a season built on resilience. Cumberland showed fight until the final whistle, and the experience against a top-five side will only sharpen their focus for the road ahead.

Cumberland's final regular season game will be this Saturday at home against Campbellsville at 2:30 pm.
