Purdue Hands MTSU Women’s Soccer 3-0 Defeat; Coach Rhoden Praises Competitive Effort

MURFREESBORO, TN - The Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to Purdue on Friday in a hard-fought non-conference matchup that Head Coach Aston Rhoden said did not fully reflect the competitiveness on the field.

Purdue struck early when Irene Campo finished a tight-angle opportunity in the second minute, assisted by Kate Noel and Tanna Schornstein. The Boilermakers added a second goal in the 32nd minute through McKenzie Carle, who later completed her brace in the 86th minute to seal the result. MTSU goalkeeper Demi Gronauer turned away several threats, including saves on shots from Rosa Maalouf, Zoe Miles, Addison Feldman, Megan Santa Cruz, Jaiden Anderson, and others, while also coming off her line to clean up dangerous situations.

Despite the shutout, Rhoden emphasized that his side remained within striking distance for long stretches. “I don’t think the score reflects the closeness of the game,” Rhoden said. “They just happened to take the opportunities they had. We were still well within the game even after the early goal.”

At halftime, the coaching staff focused on returning to the team’s identity and limiting the impact of key Purdue players. Rhoden noted those adjustments largely succeeded in the second half. He rejected the notion that the Blue Raiders looked uncharacteristically sloppy. “I don’t think we played sloppy,” he said. “We had two or three unforced errors, and this is a team that just knew how to score goals and took advantage of that. Our team performance overall was solid.”

Rhoden highlighted Gronauer’s reliability, saying outside of a couple of breakaway chances the senior was rarely tested beyond routine situations and handled everything expected of her. He also pointed to periods of possession and threatening moments that forced Purdue goalkeeper Krystina Wolf into action, underscoring that MTSU generated opportunities of its own.

Looking ahead, Rhoden’s message to the squad centered on resiliency and continuous improvement. “Our message after a win, a tie, or a loss is identical,” he said. “What lessons do we take from this? How do we use this feedback so that the next game we’re better than the last? This game doesn’t win us a conference title, nor does it prevent us from winning one. But it gives us a building block for what we need to do in the future.”

The Blue Raiders showed they can compete with high-level programs, according to their coach. “I’m proud of the way our team played and the character they showed. We can go toe-to-toe with anybody.” MTSU will look to apply the lessons from Friday’s result as it continues its season.
