Rain, Rain, Go Away... Oh, Now It’s Sunday: MTSU Shines in Weather-Shortened Home Opener

MURFREESBORO, TN - When the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders kicked off their season-opener against the Murray State Racers, kickoff temperature sat in the upper bounds of summer heat, wrapping Floyd Stadium in oppressive humidity. By the time the night finally surrendered to the early hours of Sunday morning, those high temperatures had vanished—replaced by severe lightning, two extended weather delays, and a torrential downpour that sent over 16,000 fans scrambling for shelter.

Yet despite the elements stretching the game long past midnight, head coach Derek Mason’s squad delivered a dominant performance on the field, cruising to a 38-14 victory over the Racers. The contest was officially called with 11:01 remaining in the fourth quarter following a final, unresolvable severe weather stoppage.

The Blue Raiders set the tone early behind the steady play of quarterback Roman Gagliano. Finding his rhythm fast, Gagliano linked up with wide receiver Cam'ron Lacy for a 10-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter to open the scoring. Lacy, who finished the night with multiple key receptions, proved to be Gagliano’s favorite target downfield, repeatedly stretching Murray State’s defensive coverage.

MTSU built a commanding 21-7 lead going into halftime, capped by Gagliano’s 22-yard touchdown scramble.

The standard for the night, however, was set by how the team handled adversity. With severe weather rolling over Murfreesboro, forcing players to retreat to the locker room for nearly two and a half hours, staying focused was a challenge.

"We just tried to stay sane—laughing, having fun with teammates, keeping our heads in it," Lacy said postgame, crediting the locker room’s tight-knit culture for keeping the unit locked in during the prolonged stalls.

When play resumed, Middle Tennessee’s defense delivered the knockout blow early in the fourth quarter. Safety Kalen Woods provided the highlight of the night, forcing and recovering a fumble before motoring 39 yards to the end zone for a defensive touchdown to extend the lead to 38-14.

"Wins are hard to get," Mason said following the win. "Our guys had good energy. It was exciting to see us get a defensive touchdown—we haven't done that in a while here."

The Blue Raiders next challenge will be versus Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia on September 12.
