Rollin in September - Fisk 6 - 0 - As Hot as the Weather
NASHVILLE, TN - The Fisk University Women’s Volleyball team is turning up the heat this fall. Currently sitting at a stellar 12-4 overall, the Lady Bulldogs have been absolute force on the hardwood, remaining undefeated in September with a flawless 6-0 record throughout the month.
Fisk's September surge was put to the test in a thrilling four-set battle against Lindsey Wilson College. Powered by set-orchestrator Kaia Barnett, who consistently fed dynamic options across the net, the Lady Bulldogs captured Set 1 with a 25-23 victory. After dropping Set 2 (25-23), Fisk flexed its resilience. Down late in the fourth frame, serve specialist Shelby Chamblin delivered a crucial service ace to swing momentum before the Lady Bulldogs closed out the 3-1 match win (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23) via a crucial joint block by Laila Esters and Chennille McClellan.
The momentum carried seamlessly into a high-stakes showdown against Cumberlands University (KY). The Lady Bulldogs claimed Set 1 (25-22) behind powerful front-row kills from Esters and Shelby Chamblin. After Cumberland edged out Set 2, Fisk came out firing in Set 3 behind early dominant runs from La'Niyah Lumpkin and Reagan Jones, holding off a late Phoenix push to take the set 25-22. In the decisive fourth set, baseline pressure made all the difference; back-to-back service aces from Kacie Miyahira blew open an 18-14 lead, while Barnett sealed the 3-1 victory (25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22) with a walk-off service ace on match point.
Fisk saved its most dominant performance of the stretch in a Thursday night (Sept. 10) match against Oakwood University, sweeping the Ambassador squad in explosive fashion. In Set 1, the Lady Bulldogs unleashed an overwhelming attack, leaning on heavy swings from Lumpkin and Chamblin alongside ace serving from McClellan to cruise to a 25-7 win. The secondary frame proved no different as Barnett set the tone early from the service line with consecutive aces, propelling Fisk to double-digit leads and setting the pace for a swift 3-0 sweep.
Through every pressure-packed rally and late-set battle, Fisk’s balanced playmaking and aggressive serving have proven unshakeable. Standing at 12-4 overall and flawless through September, the Lady Bulldogs show no signs of cooling down as they head deeper into regular season play.
