Trevecca Softball Battles Through Tough Series Against West Florida

By David Oglesby

NASHVILLE, TN – The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team faced a challenging weekend against the No. 12 West Florida, dropping two close games on Friday before rallying for a thrilling 6-5 victory in the series finale on today. The Trojans now stand at 5-7 overall and 1-7 in the Gulf South Conference.

In Friday's doubleheader, Trevecca fought hard but fell in both games. In the opener, the Trojans answered an early deficit with a two-run homer from Brianna Asmondy in the third inning, tying the game 2-2. Despite key contributions from Bailey Goad, who pitched a complete game, Trevecca lost 6-3.

The 2nd game saw the Trojans again rally late, cutting into West Florida's lead. Kyleigh Burgett hit a solo home run, and the team managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning through a series of hits. However, West Florida pulled ahead with four runs in the seventh, sealing a 7-4 victory.

The series concluded on Saturday with a dramatic win for Trevecca. They jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Annalise Mecklenburg's two-run homer and a solo shot from Shay Hollingsworth. West Florida responded to tie the game at 3-3, but Bailey Goad's homer in the seventh drove in the winning run.

Coach Ben Tyree, now in his 16th season, has led the Trojans to an impressive 465-199-2 record. His numerous accolades, including eight Coach of the Year selections, underscore his commitment to creating a thriving environment for student-athletes. "We're here to prepare young women for life beyond college while giving them a high-level softball experience," said Tyree.

Trevecca's successful finale gives the team momentum as they prepare to face Union University in Jackson, TN, on March 13 and 14. The Trojans have many more games to rectify their record before Gulf South Championship play in May.
