Unbeaten Run Continues! Blue Raiders Battle Lipscomb to 0-0 Draw, Secure Program-Best 4-0-2 Start

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee stayed unblemished on the year Sunday night at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium, battling crosstown rival Lipscomb to a scoreless 0-0 draw. With the tie, the Blue Raiders move to 4-0-2 on the year, continuing the program's best-ever start to a season while securing their fifth clean sheet through six matches.

The Blue Raiders established control early, outshooting the Bisons 16-9 overall and 10-5 in the first half. In the eighth minute, Hannah Murphy forced an early save from Lipscomb goalkeeper Sundell Woodard following quick combination play from Jess Gray, Ania Denham, and Hailey Phillips. Blue Raider goalkeeper Ella Sellers stood just as tall on the other end, turning away four shots on the night—including crucial first-half attempts from Tatum Ahlemeyer and Annalise Cannada—to preserve her fifth shutout of the campaign.

The performance served as a strong bounce-back in tempo and identity after Thursday’s physical clash against Miami (OH).

"Our plan for tonight was really to establish our identity—get back to our identity because we felt we lost our way a little bit against Miami," MTSU head coach Aston Rhoden said. "I felt like we did some of that. We just didn't finalize the attacks that we had."

Middle Tennessee continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, earning set-piece opportunities led by dangerous strikes from Denham in the 52nd and 62nd minutes. However, singular attacks and a lack of extra numbers in the penalty box kept the Blue Raiders from finding the back of the net.

"We need to get more people inside that red zone," Rhoden noted. "Tonight, I felt like our attack was isolated at times. When we did get extra bodies forward, we were able to create good opportunities, but a lot of times it was kind of too singular."

Defensively, the Blue Raiders dominated possession to keep Lipscomb’s dangerous attack in check, limiting the Bisons' chances to transition breaks rather than sustained pressure.

"We had better possession of the ball," Rhoden said. "When you're in possession of the ball, the other team really can't score... that made things a lot more predictable and a little bit easier for our defense."

Though late video review challenges on close boundary calls didn't swing MTSU's way down the stretch, Rhoden remains focused on the bigger picture as non-conference play progresses.

"I do like the resiliency that we've shown," Rhoden said. "I do like the fact that we've been able to win in different ways... Now, it's just a matter of can we be a little bit more consistent in what we do."

MTSU concludes its three-match homestand on Thursday, Sept. 3, hosting Big Ten opponent Purdue at 7 p.m.
