NEWARK, NJ - In a nail-biting contest, the Vanderbilt Commodores edged out the Michigan Wolverines with a final score of 72-69, showcasing their collective effort and resilience. The game, played in a neutral setting, had the atmosphere of an NCAA tournament matchup, thrilling fans and players alike.
Player Highlights
Vanderbilt guard Mikayla Blakes expressed immense pride in her team after the victory. "I’m very proud of us. I think everybody did something special who entered into the game," Blakes remarked. "That’s the part of being on a team."
A standout for the Commodores was freshman point guard Aubrey Galvan, who not only handled the pressure of a tight game but also delivered crucial plays down the stretch. Coach Shea Ralph praised her performance, stating, "Just like how competitive she is, she’s a baller, and she wants to be in big moments." Galvan ended the night with 20 points, helping to keep Vanderbilt unbeaten at 19-0.
Strategic Success
When asked about the challenges of maintaining momentum with an undefeated record, Ralph emphasized the importance of staying grounded. "Not to be complacent," she said. "Yes, this was a good win, but we still have more of our season left to go."
The team displayed versatility and depth, which Ralph pointed out was vital for success moving forward. "We couldn't have done it without Aubrey or the rest of our team. Everybody contributed today, and that's what it takes to win in March."
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, both Blakes and Ralph are focused on building from their successes. Ralph commented, “We’re just taking it one day at a time, one game at a time. I loved it today. We didn't play our best and we came away with a really good win against a really good team.”
With momentum on their side and a perfect record intact, the Commodores are gearing up to face the second half of their season with determination and teamwork. Fans will be eagerly awaiting their next matchup against Auburn this Thursday, Jan. 22 @ Memorial Gym.
