It’s the electrifying time of year when the regular season gives way to the high-stakes drama of conference basketball tournaments, serving as the ultimate proving ground before the national spectacle of March Madness descends upon us later this month.
For the passionate fans in the Nashville community, the excitement is already rising as local programs across various divisions battle for automatic bids and crucial momentum.
The early action has already delivered thrilling results for Nashville-area teams, setting the stage for a packed week of must-watch college basketball.
NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference Shakes Up Early
The NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference tournament saw early action involving Trevecca Nazarene. On Monday, March 2nd, the men’s team faced a tough challenge, falling in overtime to the number three seed West Florida, 96-92. However, the Trevecca Nazarene women’s squad is heating up at the right time advancing to the semifinals after defeating Lee 63-53 in the quarterfinals. Their semifinal matchup was scheduled for later today in Huntsville, Alabama.
SEC Showdowns Head to Nashville and South Carolina
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) tournament is a major focal point, as the men’s championship will be held right in the heart of Music City at Bridgestone Arena from March 11th to the 15th, offering local fans an up-close experience with top-tier tournament basketball.
On the women’s side, the SEC tournament begans today in Greenville, SC with local interest:
No. 6 Tennessee was set to face No. 11 Alabama, with the winner advancing to the next day’s round.
Vanderbilt, ranked number two seed, awaits the winner of the Auburn versus Ole Miss game to begin their tournament run.
ASUN and OVC Tournaments: Austin Peay Leads the Charge
The Atlantic Sun (ASUN) Conference tournament, held in Jacksonville, Florida, started on March 3rd and immediately featured a local rivalry:
Austin Peay defeated Lipscomb 63-56 in their opening matchup. Austin Peay continued their strong run, winning their quarterfinal game against Eastern Kentucky 45-41 earlier today. The Governors will play next on Saturday, March 7th, facing the winner of the FGCU/Stetson in the semifinals.
In the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) on the men’s side, Tennessee State secured the regular season championship, which automatically placed them in the semifinals. They are scheduled to play the winner of the Eastern Illinois versus UT Martin game on Friday, March 6th.
ASUN Men’s Conference Sees Local Teams Clash
In the men’s bracket Lipscomb is scheduled to play Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) today with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Saturday.
No. 2 Austin Peay is also in action against Stetson. The winner will also advance to semifinal play.
Belmont Dominates the Missouri Valley Conference
The Belmont Bruins enter the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament as the number one seed, capping off a remarkable regular season. The Bruins secured the outright MVC regular season championship, a feat that has historically paved the way for deep tournament runs for programs like Loyola Chicago and Wichita State. Belmont is set to play the winner of the Drake versus Southern Illinois game in the quarterfinal round on Friday, March 6th.
The MVC Women’s Tournament is scheduled to begin on March 12th, with the bracket still being finalized due to ongoing conference play.
A Look Ahead to March Madness
With conference tournaments running through the first half of March, the anticipation builds toward Selection Sunday on March 15th, followed by the start of the NCAA Tournament's "First Four" on March 17th. The SEC Men’s Tournament in Nashville serves as the final major tune-up for many regional powerhouses before the national bracket is revealed.
While local HBCUs Fisk and Cumberland had their tournaments earlier in February, neither the men's nor women's teams were able to advance in their respective postseason competitions.
The atmosphere is charged with the possibility of Cinderella stories and buzzer-beaters. For Nashville, the SEC Tournament hosting duties ensures that the city remains a central hub of college basketball excitement as the road to March Madness officially kicks into high gear.
